I'm a database junkie. Long before the Internet took off, I had a part-time business setting up and automating databases for companies.

There are plenty of databases for sale out there, some can be had for free and others, can be “scraped”. Scraping websites for content is done in several ways. For me the easiest way is to put the job up on a freelance website.

In my situation I purchased database of recipes. Then using FileMaker Pro, I built a simple script to generate a PDF cookbook based on a keyword search. I.e. If you wanted a smoothie recipe cookbook, I would enter the word smoothie and click a button.

A script would run to ?nd the appropriate recipes, randomize the order, generate a PDF title page, table of contents and recipe pages. When FileMaker Pro was done its portion of the script it would trigger an external application that I wrote using AppleScript (yeah I'm a Mac boy) that would merge the three PDF documents and compress them. All of this happens in under 30 seconds.

You can buy a database of baby names, their meanings and origins for next to nothing. Imagine how easy it would be to ask someone a couple of simple questions, enter some search terms and create a customized list of baby names.

There are no shortage of business directory databases. It would be easy to offer a business catalog based on a city or category search.

Using a movie database you could provide custom movie catalogs actor, director, writer or producer searches.

While doing this report I did a search for purchase database on Google and found no shortage of other databases like jokes, dictionary de?nitions, aircraft models, ISBN databases, video game cheats, Yellow Pages, web hosts, medical conditions and the list goes on.

You can see how easy it could be to create custom content using the right software and scripting combinations.
