A blog is a place on the web where the blog owner and web visitors can leave comments on anything that’s been written. The word “blog” comes from “web log” which is a sort of journaling record or diary of thoughts and facts. To become interactive with the content displayed on a blog, users add their “comments” along with an email address and their name.

All comments can be seen by anyone unless the owner of the blog password protects a specific area, for example in a membership site. Leaving a comment on a blog with a link back to your website or blog is one way for obtaining backlinks, which essentially make your site look more popular, while making the blog appear as more of an authority. The more links coming into your site, the better.

For those who don’t like to write, earning a side income as a “blogging” Internet Marketer might not be as popular with you as some of the other income streams. Keep in mind that if you’re following someone’s blog posts (their journal entry for a specific day), and you leave positive comments, and often, the blog owner will begin to see that your comments are genuine contributions to the blog itself.

Blogging, just like other social media avenues like Twitter or Facebook, encourage relationships and the sharing of information. While it’s true that not every blog post is a positive one that gets written by a web visitor, many long-term business partnerships can branch out of blogging.

Another way to get more customers coming to your site is to see if the blog that you frequently visit uses guest contributors. If so, then you could write a meaty 750-1,000 word article about a topic of interest to that specific blog owner.

If your article gets accepted, the goal is a link back to your site and a “mention” as a guest contributor. The benefit is that all the visitors to that blog will have an opportunity to read your article and then follow the link to your site, or at least find out more about you. It requires time to write the article, and time to communicate with the blog owner, but other than that, there are no costs involved.

I like to think of my time spent blogging as a valid investment in my Internet Marketing business. It’s free. I can blog whenever I have a few minutes, and it puts my website’s link out there. There’s nothing wrong with free advertising, right?
