Touching – Anything that triggers our emotions deeply is liable to be passed on and shared.

Funny – Anything capable of making someone laugh out loud, right from the gut, usually gets shared. People like to be entertained – and they like things that brighten their day.

Plus, humorous content is an “easy” share – one doesn’t (usually) have to worry about offending people; and humor crosses all niches

Shocking – Anything that’s almost too amazing to be believed is irresistible. “Did you hear about the two-headed whale? Look! Here’s an actual photo!” (We all like wowing our friends.

Arresting – Not quite the same as “shocking”, arresting subjects bring depth to human experience, make us question our beliefs, jolt us out of complacency or strike us deeply with profundity.

Voyeuristic – We share this for the same reason that people stop to rubberneck at traffic accidents. We revel in other peoples’ foolishness: (“Do you believe he was stupid enough to get caught?”)

Irreverent – It’s the “naughty kid” instinct in us that loves to poke fun at institutions, authority or “the norm”. This streak of irreverence makes people share ribald jokes or satirical digs. And sometimes it’s a way that “nice” people can vicariously vent about things they secretly want to bash.

Current – Whatever peoples’ minds and attentions are caught up with at the moment will definitely go viral. For example, Kristen Stewart’s very public affair with director Rupert Sanders: Not only is she relevant and current to millions of “Twilight” fans (with the final Twilight movie about to be released – let’s not underestimate the role of the media in deciding what’s current and relevant), but if you look up Kristen Stewart and betrayed beau, Robert Pattinson, in Google Trends, his popularity is twice as intense as hers: Hence all the sympathy for him.
