There are many kinds of file formats that your video can take. Your choice of a file format should depend on the purpose that your video aims to fulfill. There is no general rule on which file format is considered the standard in the Internet marketing industry; it's always on a case-to-case basis.

For example, if you want casual visitors to enjoy your videos while browsing your website, then a Flash file format, with the extension .swf, will be the best option for you. This is because a Flash file format is a well- compressed file. Your visitors will be able to experience your videos even if they have slow connections. Additionally, a Flash file format will eliminate the problems of space consumption, streaming technology, and the like. Users can immediately load up a Flash file using Macromedia's proprietary Flash plug download, which is present in most PCs these days.

If you want your videos to work like podcasts, on the other hand, then you need a file format that will allow iPods and portable MP3 players to store and display them. For iPods, either .MOV or .MPEG and its varieties, are the file formats to use. Ipods read these formats and can easily store them in either the system itself or the hub for future synching. Other MP3 players might only be able to read .MPEG files.

If your want your videos to be downloadable so that your users can view them anytime they please, even when they're offline, then any video file format will suffice.

If you want your videos to take on a viral spin, like the mobile phone market (a novel marketing tactic, by the way,) you might want to convert your videos into a .3GP file format to satisfy such a purpose. Most mobile phones read .3GP files, especially those belonging to the Nokia line.

Yet another file format that you might want to consider is .RM, which is a video file format readable with the Real Media Player. Though the Real Media Player is not as popular as Windows Media Player or Apple Quicktime, the way in which the program compresses its video files is quite difficult to dismiss. Because of this, .RM files have also been used in many mobile operating systems.
